3D bioprinting has a positive impact on root canal treatment
Recently, researchers at the University of Oregon Health and Science (OHSU) developed a process involving the use of a bioprinter to print blood vessels in teeth that have been removed. This is expected to have a positive impact on root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment removes the pulp that has damaged the teeth and fills a substance called gutta-percha. This thermoplastic material is similar to rubber and is used to fill the interior of the teeth. But because the blood vessels and nerves of the teeth are removed, this inanimate filler can't restore the function of the teeth, such as biological reactions and defense mechanisms. Therefore, adult teeth may be damaged quickly, so you need to bring the crown or unplug and replant the dentures.
Recovery function
This new study by OHSU is expected to alleviate this problem and restore the function of the patient's teeth.
The new method uses pre-vascularized pulpy tissue to promote pulp regeneration and achieve a better long-term treatment. To prove the effectiveness of the new method, the researchers planted a substance consisting of hydrogels, dental pulp cells, and endothelial cells in an extracted human tooth. Endothelial cells form the interior of blood vessels.
