Dairy cows should be reared in groups

Reserve mother cows of different ages and adult female cows of different lactation stages have different diets, nutritional needs, and feeding and management methods. Therefore, large-scale dairy farms and dairy cattle breeding households must improve their rearing efficiency. Whether it is a back-up female cow or an adult female cow, it must be managed in groups.

Adult Cow

Adult cows can be divided into five groups according to their lactation stages: 1. Dry period (60 days): This period is crucial for the postpartum and breast health of dairy cows, from the date of the suspension to the date of delivery.

2. Late perinatal period (15 days): Delivery date to 15 days after delivery (within half a month after delivery). This period is critical for the health of dairy cows and their future milk production.

3. Lactation period (105 days): 16-120 days after delivery (within 4 months after childbirth). Milk production accounts for 45%-50% of total milk production during lactation.

4. Mid-lactation (90 days): 121-210 days after delivery (five to seven months after childbirth). Milk production accounts for about 30% of milk production in the whole lactation period.

5. Late lactation (90 days): 211 days after childbirth until the day before stopping milk (8th to 10th months after childbirth). Milk production accounts for 20%-25% of milk production during the lactation period.

Reserve cow

According to the physiological development stage, the reserve cows can be generally divided into six groups:

1. Lactating yaks (0-3 months of age): This stage is the period with the highest incidence and mortality in reserve cows.

2. Weaning yak (3-6 months old): This stage is the fastest growing period.

3. Small-breeding cattle (6-12 months of age): This period is the cow's sexual maturity, and the cow's puberty occurs at 10-12 months of age.

4. Large-breeding cattle (12-18 months old): This period is the period of maturation of cows, 16-18 months of age is the initial period of the cow.

5. Pre-pregnancy young cows (18-24 months of age): This phase is the early pregnancy of cows and is also an important period of breast development.

6. Late pregnancy young cows (24-27 months old): This phase is the period of preparation for the initial production and lactation of cows, and it is the transition period from reserve cows to adult cows.
