Gene Therapy for Animal Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Matsumoto Yang, a researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience, Tokyo, Japan, recently used gene therapy to treat dilated cardiomyopathy in animal experiments. The researchers first made special proteins that could cause dilated cardiomyopathy. They were injected into two groups of mice to cause dilated cardiomyopathy. Later, a special gene was developed and injected into the media. The heart of one group of mice, the other group did not do any treatment. It was found that 44% of the untreated mice died of cardiac insufficiency and none of the treated 12 mice died. Heart tissue observations showed that mice treated with gene therapy did not show symptoms of myocarditis.
