Japan uses platelet-regenerating cartilage Researchers at Kyoto University and Kobe University recently used cartilage to regenerate cartilage tissue in animal experiments, thus developing a new method for treating knee meniscus injury.
The new method is based on first taking blood from the patient, extracting high concentrations of platelets, then allowing the platelets to penetrate into the jelly-like gel and injecting the gel from the patient's knee into the affected area. The gel slowly decomposes in the body, and after about two weeks, the platelets are gradually released. Platelets contain a large number of proteins that promote the increase of bone and cartilage tissue and are currently used medically to strengthen the bones of the ankle or gums. Gels are often used as hemostatic agents, and there are no safety issues. In the animal experiment, the researchers opened a small hole with a diameter of about 8 mm on the knee of the rabbit with damaged meniscus, and injected the gel infiltrated with the platelet into the small hole under the endoscope. About a month later, the experts confirmed that the cartilage tissue of the experimental rabbit was regenerated and the meniscus was repaired.
