Canada discovers new biomarkers that help treat cancer more effectively
According to the website of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the University of Alberta in Canada found that a protein called RYBP can prevent cancer cells from self-repairing, which may help to treat cancer more effectively. RYBP, a member of the atypical polycombotic repressor complex 1 (PRC1), is expressed as a transcriptional regulator similar to other members of PRC1 and is well known for regulating gene expression.
A large research team found that protein RYBP blocks DNA repair in cancer cells, including breast cancer, which in turn can make chemotherapy or radiation therapy more effective. Despite DNA damage, resistant cancer cells can repair themselves and prevent cancer by treating them more effectively.
This finding may be another way of precision treatment that will allow cancer treatment to be adjusted based on the patient's DNA. The new RYBP biomarkers predict which patients will benefit from a particular type of chemotherapy, as well as the opportunity to develop drugs that activate RYBP in tumors to treat cancers, including breast cancer.
The researchers found that breast cancer cells with high levels of RYBP are more sensitive to DNA damage after radiation therapy or drug therapy, which allows breast cancer cells with high RYBP to respond better to some cancer and radiation therapy.
In a previous study, the research team at Ada found that the PRC1 complex helps repair DNA damage in cancer cells, and this time they were surprised to find that RYBP prevented the DNA-free repair process.
