Research: Following a Nordic diet can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease

According to the British "Daily Mail" reported on July 24, a new study shows that following Nordic eating habits can protect human cognition and thinking ability and reduce the risk of dementia.

Previous studies have shown that Mediterranean staple foods, such as oily fish and vegetables, have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent cerebral vascular damage and effectively prevent dementia. Similar to the Mediterranean diet, Nordic people advocate cooking at home with a small amount of sugar, using rapeseed oil instead of olive oil. Rapeseed oil is related to the metabolically active brown fat in the human body. Brown fat can accelerate the decomposition of sugar to regulate the blood sugar level in the human body. Hyperglycemia is prone to Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers from Tianjin Medical University conducted a six-year follow-up survey of 2,223 normal people over the age of 65, conducted a “mental state test” and filled out a dietary questionnaire to list 98 options to determine their diet. Participants were rated as low, medium and high in accordance with their adherence to the Nordic diet and their physical, psychological and social activities.

At the International Conference of the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago, Dr. Doug Brown, chief policy researcher, said that they studied how to promote human memory and thinking through diet. The older you are, the more likely you are to suffer from dementia, but you can now reduce your chances of getting sick through a healthy diet and staying active.

Prior to this, scientists invented a mixed diet that could prevent dementia. A January 2017 study found that a combination of a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat diet is conducive to human thinking, reasoning, and memory.

The study adds that in the MIND recipe, it is required to regularly ingest 9 foods or drinks, at least one green leafy vegetable per day, twice a week, or even one glass a day. In addition, it encourages dieters to chew candy and pastries, only four times a week.

When the cognitive survivors with reduced cognitive ability persisted for 13 years in accordance with the MIND diet, their risk of dementia was significantly reduced, and researchers said the eating habits also benefit the healthy brain.
