Scientist 3D bio printer prints human skin

A group of scientists used a 3D bioprinter to print skin precursors and full-featured human skin. New technologies are available for the pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetic businesses.

Printed human skin is the brainchild of researchers from the Carlos III University in Madrid, CIEMAT or the Energy, Environmental and Technological Research Center and the Gregorio Maranon Comprehensive University with the help of the BioDan Group.

This process can be used in two ways. The first is the production of allogeneic skin from cell storage for industrial purposes. The patient's skin is then used to produce autologous cells for therapeutic use, such as burns. This new "automation and industrialization" program will be cheaper than manually producing skin.

According to UC3M, human skin will be one of the first "live" organs created by bioprinting, the first being introduced to the market. Interestingly, the product itself "likes" the skin, with epidermis and dermis. Its third layer is fibroblasts, which produce collagen, providing the elasticity and strength of the skin.

The study, published in Biofabrication, marks the first use of 3D printing technology to actually create human skin. Researchers use biomaterials instead of ink cartridges and colored inks to "print" the skin. This means that syringes with biological components are used to create skin, such as printers that make paper.

One of the researchers, Juan Francisco del Canizo, says that the best way to do this is to learn which components are best mixed so that the cells don't die quickly.

Scientists first use human cells, so they can create their own human collagen, which means they will operate on their own, independent of animal collagen.

European regulators are currently authorizing the use of this method in cases of transplant or skin problems.
