On January 8th, the 2017 National Science and Technology Award was announced. The minimally invasive treatment system for osteoporotic vertebral fractures was completed by Professor Yang Huilin, a member of the First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University (hereinafter referred to as “Su Da Fu Yi Yuan”). The establishment and application won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. It is worth mentioning that this is also the second time that the orthopaedic team of the First Affiliated Hospital of the Soviet Union won the national award after 2004.

Osteoporosis caused by vertebral fractures is called the "invisible killer" of the elderly. Many patients suffer from complications caused by long-term bed rest after vertebral fracture. Non-surgical patients have a mortality rate of 49.4% within 4 years. With the rapid development of population aging, China has 1.81 million new patients each year, and the number of patients suffering from this disease is expected to reach 50 million by 2020. The orthopaedic team led by Professor Yang Huilin of the First Affiliated Hospital of Su Da has challenged this world medical problem. Dozens of orthopaedic experts have finally formed a series of new strategies for diagnosis and treatment for 17 years, and the technology has been promoted nationwide.

In 2000, on the basis of a solid discipline established by Professor Dong Tianhua and Tang Tianyi, Yang Huilin led the orthopaedic team to the international frontier and introduced the minimally invasive technique of kyphoplasty in China. Simply “snap a shot” into the fractured vertebral body, first use the balloon to prop up the fractured vertebral body, and then inject a special “bone cement” to fix the fracture block and restore its ability to support gravity, which not only can quickly relieve pain. The wound is only the size of the signature refill, and the patient can stand up and walk the next day after surgery.

The spine is surrounded by ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. A slight deviation in surgery can cause major problems. Minimally invasive kyphoplasty, although the injury is small, may cause spinal cord injury, pulmonary embolism, etc. due to insufficient precision of the puncture or perfusion of cement, which may lead to paralysis and even death.

Under the leadership of Yang Huilin, the team of dozens of orthopedic surgeons, after more than 10 years of research, first proposed the concept of "painful responsibility vertebral body" and "bone nonunion" and the criteria for judgment, and established a modulation perfusion block and bone cement. Bone anchoring technology, as well as safe operation of precise vertebral body puncture, quantitative reduction and "bone cement" gradient perfusion, prevent the occurrence of spinal cord injury or pulmonary embolism during puncture and perfusion, thus filling up the vertebral body The "short board" that has existed for a long time in kyphoplasty.

The research results have changed the concept of treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures, and formed a new integrated diagnosis and treatment strategy for the actual needs of patients. It has been widely applied in tens of thousands of cases nationwide, with good clinical efficacy, even in the past due to 4 Patients with vertebral fractures above the segment who have no choice but to give up treatment have benefited from it and have been highly recognized by domestic and foreign counterparts. Professor Yang Huilin led the preparation of the first white paper on the standardized diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in China. The research results were adopted by medical treatment guidelines or specifications in the United States, Britain, Belgium, Sweden and other countries.

“'Suzhou Theory' has made an important contribution to the advancement and promotion of minimally invasive techniques for osteoporotic vertebral fractures,” said Professor Hansen A. Yuan, Executive Chairman of the International Society of Spinal Surgery and a renowned international spine surgeon.

"This achievement is the crystallization of the efforts of several generations of the orthopaedic team. This award is both an honor and an affirmation, but I think the most important thing is to further popularize the concept of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. The public's health awareness will benefit the people." Yang Huilin said frankly.
