Conservation, Excavation and Utilization of Aquatic Vegetable Germplasm Resources
Relying on the National Aquatic Vegetable Garden set up by the Wuhan Institute of Vegetable Science in Hubei Province, currently there are more than 1700 aquatic vegetable resources of 12 categories, including lotus, white rice, and quail from 25 domestic provinces and 9 countries including Thailand. The assessment and utilization of resource identification is not enough, and the utilization rate of excellent germplasm is not high.
In recent years, the significant increase in the cost of lotus root picking and excavation has become a prominent issue that restricts the development of lotus roots. It is increasingly necessary to select and breed lotus root varieties that are easy to be dredged into the mud. However, there are problems with the mature structure of japonica rice, the lack of extremely late-maturing varieties, and the deteriorating quality of steamed bread. Breeding late-maturing waxy white varieties and high-quality and high-yielding alfalfa varieties is more urgent.
China is the main producing area for aquatic vegetables in the world, with a total area of more than 10 million mu. However, extensive management in the traditional way of local breeds has led to the lack of application of many new varieties and new efficient cultivation models in production. In response to these problems, we have explored excellent resources for aquatic vegetables, selected new varieties, and committed to direct application in production.
The institute has excavated 28 excellent germplasm resources such as extremely early-maturing lotus seed germplasm, tropical lotus germplasm, high-starch alfalfa germplasm, and extremely early-ripening cress germplasm; a new variety of shallow lotus seedlings, “Elian 6â€, was selected for breeding. â€New varieties of early-ripening lotus root “Elian 7â€, new late-ripening white clam variety “0175 white clamâ€, new high-quality clam variety “Ejing 1â€, and new high-yield watercress variety “E Shuisui 1†and other five aquatic vegetables New breeds; Established a breeding base for lotus roots, lotus roots, and lotus roots in Wuhan, Hubei, Xiaogan City, Honghu City, Yuexi County, Anhui Province, Changpu County, Guangxi Province, and Guilin City. Vegetable varieties; research and improvement and promotion of the application of six cultivation modes: lotus-late rice (Japonica, Artemisia halodendron), water-saving lotus root, plateau lotus root, white alpine peony, alpine leeks, early rice - alfalfa; formulation of 6 provincial standards in Hubei Province.
New varieties of aquatic vegetables, excellent resources, and new cultivation models have been promoted to more than 20 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) including Hubei and Hunan. According to incomplete statistics, the country has accumulatively promoted more than 5 million mu of new varieties of aquatic vegetables. This achievement was awarded the second prize of China Agricultural Science and Technology Award in 2009.
