3M BIC Print Skull Shows Superb Skills in the Medical Field

Designers from the 3M Buckley Innovation Center (3M BIC) in Huddersfield, England, scanned 3D human-sized skulls based on a colleague's MRI (MRI) scan. The 3D Print Skull is crafted using SLS and FDM 3D printing technology to show how additive manufacturing affects the healthcare industry .

The establishment of 3M BIC aims to promote the connection between enterprises and academia, with the goal of business growth and reform and innovation. Its latest 3D printed skull project brings a new mission to its corporate designers – using 3D design software and 3D printing to repair damaged skulls. The skull model is based on the MRI of 3M BIC staff, and the design team used OsiriX's free software to convert the raw data from the MRI scan into a 3D model of the skull. For the model, the designer focuses on the bone density of the skull. Before the advent of the 3D model, designers used implants to correct or eliminate inconsistencies in the digital skull surface.

“Our skull project is not only a full interpretation of 3D printing, but also emphasizes how to incorporate 3D design into the medical industry,” Michael Wilson explains. “If doctors are more free to view MRI scans in 3D, this will make They are better able to understand the patient's condition and improve the progress of the reconstructive surgery."
