From the treatment of arthritis to senile dementia, is the fashionable whole body freezing method really reliable?

The US FDA warns that systemic cryotherapy, a fashionable treatment that is widely used from arthritis to senile dementia, can pose serious health risks.

“Based on the legendary health benefits seen in many cryotherapy, consumers may mistakenly believe that the FDA has identified or approved these devices as a safe and effective medical method,” Dr. Aron Yustein of the FDA Equipment and Radiation Health Center at an institution. Said at the press conference. "However, it is not the case."

According to the National Cancer Institute, cryotherapy involves freezing abnormal tissues; it is often used to kill early skin cancer cells.

In whole body cryotherapy, the entire body is enclosed in a room and exposed to cold air for a few minutes. Steam is produced from liquid nitrogen and can reach ultra-low temperatures, the FDA said.

The benefits of systemic cryotherapy are still under investigation, although proponents claim that the therapy can alleviate symptoms such as fibromyalgia, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, stress, anxiety or chronic pain.

But the FDA says the therapy has many risks.

“The potential hazards include suffocation, especially when liquid nitrogen is used for freezing,” said FDA science critic Dr. Anna Ghambaryan.

Exposure to nitrogen vapor in a closed space may deprive people of oxygen and make them unconscious. Other risks include frostbite, burns and eye injuries, the FDA said.

This treatment may also worsen existing medical conditions, the agency said.

The FDA recommends that people consult their doctors before considering systemic cryotherapy.

The agency said some systemic cryotherapy operators also claim that the therapy improves circulation, promotes metabolism, accelerates recovery and post-training soreness, and relieves joint pain.

The effect of systemic cryotherapy on blood pressure, heart rhythm or metabolism is unclear, the FDA said.
