If these artificial red blood cells can enter the clinical stage, it will be more effective than the current red blood cell products from donors; in addition, this technology can also meet the needs of patients with rare red blood cell types.
Â
The idea is not to use immortalized stem cells instead of donor blood cells. For routine blood transmission, the donor's blood is still important. However, it is very difficult to enrich red blood cells from the donor's blood, and 15 million milliliters of blood can barely meet the needs of patients, especially for patients with sickle-type red blood cell anemia.
Â
In the past, researchers have tried to use the stem cells of donors to directly convert into mature red blood cells for use. This technology does work, but it is extremely inefficient.
Â
Each stem cell can produce at least 50,000 red blood cells in its lifetime, which may sound quite good. However, there are also 100 billion mature red blood cells in the conventional blood bag, so it takes a long time to proliferate. To solve this problem, researchers have taken advantage of a different approach. They converted adult stem cells into the world's first immortalized stem cell line, which they named the BEL-A cell line.
Â
In order to create this immortalized cell, the researchers succeeded in keeping this adult stem cell in the early stages of differentiation, which means that these stem cells can differentiate forever to form red blood cells without dying.
Â
"Previous research programs have focused on many different types of stem cells, but the number of red blood cells that these stem cells can provide is quite limited."
Â
Immortalized stem cells may sound familiar, because there is also an immortalized cell line that is used by a large number of laboratories around the world. It is HELA. The immortalized stem cell called BEL-A is isolated from the volunteer's blood sample, and its sole function is to produce adult red blood cells. If these red blood cells can be clinically tested, they will be no less meaningful than HELA cells.

Food And Beverage Additives
Food additives refer to chemical synthetic or natural substances added to food for the purpose of improving the quality, color, aroma and taste of food, as well as for the need of preservative and processing technology. Due to the rapid development of the food industry, food additives have become an important part of the modern food industry, and has become an important driving force of technological progress and technological innovation in the food industry. In the use of food additives, in addition to ensuring their due function and role, the most important thing is to ensure the safety and health of food.
