3D printing pens must be familiar to everyone! It can be regarded as a manual version of the 3D printer. Although many materials such as plastic and resin can be used at present, it is still mainly regarded as a toy. Recently, however, the Aikenhead Medical Discovery Center at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia has taken it to a new level, the bio 3D printing pen called Biopen in the picture below. 
It is understood that Biopen is jointly developed by St. Vincent Hospital, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Wollongong. The main materials are medical grade plastics and titanium. The former corresponds to its main body and the latter corresponds to its nozzle. It seems to be no different from a normal 3D printing pen, but the material used is not plastic or resin, but consists of stem cells and hydrogels (mainly gelatin and hyaluronic acid, which help stem cells survive and add value). Therefore, Biopen is not a toy, but a good tool to help doctors treat damage to muscles, bones, tendons and other parts. In actual work, it will first expel the bio-ink from the nozzle to the wound, and then cure it with ultraviolet light to provide a therapeutic effect. In fact, scientists at the Aikenhead Center have used it to successfully cure a sheep's knee.
In this recently completed experiment, the stem cells used by Biopen are the stem cells of this injured sheep. Their role is to differentiate into chondrocytes to help regenerate injured knees. It is worth mentioning that the cartilage produced with Biopen is much better than the cartilage produced by other standard techniques.
Undoubtedly, the success of this experiment proved Biopen's ability and greatly encouraged scientists at the Aikenhead Center. They hope that in the near future, Biopen will benefit many people, including athletes, and this is becoming a reality, as Biopen's commercialization process has begun. So I believe that soon after, it will enter the human experiment stage.
